As the result of the Rural Broadband Initiative, the southern quadrant
of Queen Anne’s County will soon be able to access broadband as a result
of the installation of that portion of the main trunk line of fiber
optic cable that connects the western shore to Wallops Island, VA.
Scheduled to be online by the end of 2008, this portion of the main
trunk extends along U.S. Route 50 from the Bay Bridge to the county line,
and will provide access to broadband service to Chesapeake College as
well as members of the Maryland Broadband Cooperative, such as Atlantic
Broadband and Verizon, who will utilize the service to deliver last mile
broadband service to the end consumer.
The 2nd phase of the
Initiative will extend this trunk line north along MD Route 213 to the
Chester River. Future phases of this project, once executed, will allow
the County’s users access to significant bandwidths.
