County Commissioners Approve Safe Streets & Roads for All Grant Agreement

County News Posted on December 02, 2025

The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners approved the Safe Streets & Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Agreement during their November 18, 2025, meeting.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has awarded Queen Anne’s County $280,000 in federal funding to support the development of a countywide Strategic Highway Safety Action Plan (SAP). The total project budget is $350,000, with the remaining $70,000 local match fulfilled through staff time and payroll contributions.

The Safety Action Plan will provide a comprehensive, data-driven review of crash trends, contributing factors, and roadway conditions throughout the county. Using crash data analysis, safety investigations, and input from State, County, and Municipal partners as well as the public, the plan will identify strategies and project priorities aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities.

“The safety and mobility of our residents on roadways, trails, and sidewalks is a top priority for the County Commissioners. We work closely with Maryland State Highway Administration to improve safety throughout Queen Anne’s County, and this grant strengthens our ongoing commitment to reducing crashes and enhancing transportation infrastructure.

This plan will move forward the study of multiple intersections, so we can better identify both anticipated challenges and existing problem areas. This work is critical, and we will push to accelerate the process where possible as traffic in Queen Anne’s County continues to grow each year,” said County Commissioner Jack Wilson.

This initiative supports the goals of the Zero Deaths Maryland Campaign, encouraging collaboration across jurisdictions to reduce crashes on Maryland roadways. The SAP will evaluate issues such as roadway design, excessive speed, impaired or distracted driving, and recurring crash locations, ultimately producing recommendations focused on engineering, enforcement, and education.

Approval of the grant agreement authorizes the County to hire a consultant to lead the development of the SAP.

Once completed and adopted, the Safety Action Plan will position Queen Anne’s County to pursue future federal funding to implement recommended safety improvements.
