Clearing Marine Debris from Navigational Channels

CHESAPEAKE BAY – Last week’s unusually heavy rains in the Northeast resulted in debris from as New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland surging down Susquehanna River then ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay.

The Chesapeake is currently hazardous to boaters and the State of Maryland and the counties that line the Chesapeake and its tributaries are trying to manage the debris in the navigable channels.

Maryland State Delegate Steven J. Arentz said, “We are working on gathering information from various agencies on storm response. In the meantime, DNR has four boats in the Upper Bay working to remove debris from the navigable channels. The US Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for clearing the federal channels. They have been out for a few days working now and will continue working as needed. Citizens can call the Chesapeake Bay Hotline to report debris that poses a hazard to navigation. The Chesapeake Bay Hotline number is 1-877-224-7229.”

To report blocked boat ramps in Queen Anne’s County, call the Landings Division of Parks and Recreation at 410-758-0835 x 2505.
Parks and Recreation Director Steve Chandlee said the Maryland Healthy Beaches website, www.marylandhealthybeaches.org, continues to list QAC beaches as open; however, he cautions beachgoers to be wary of debris washed ashore and some that is unseen in the water.
