Queen Anne’s County Commissioners have proclaimed September 2025 as No Matter What…You Matter Suicide Prevention Month in Queen Anne’s County.
Suicide remains a critical public health concern. Nationally, nearly 49,300 Americans died by suicide in 2023—tragically, the highest levels seen since 1941, with one life lost every 11 minutes. Across the country, 5.5% of adults report experiencing serious suicidal thoughts, and more than 42% of U.S. adults personally know someone who has died by suicide.
In Maryland, 608 residents died by suicide in 2022, representing more deaths each year than homicide. Closer to home, 18.7% of Queen Anne’s County middle school students and 20.3% of high school students reported seriously considering suicide, a sobering reminder that this crisis affects our own children, families, and neighbors.
Too often, those at risk face barriers to care such as limited access to providers, long wait times, or stigma around mental health treatment. Through this proclamation, the Commissioners reaffirm their commitment to breaking down those barriers and ensuring that behavioral health services are accessible to every resident.
The Commissioners urges everyone to recognize suicide as a significant public health risk, to prioritize mental health support, and to take action—because even a simple conversation can save a life.
