Queen Anne’s County Commissioners proclaimed October 5–11, 2025, as Fire Prevention Week in Queen Anne’s County. This year’s national theme — “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home” — highlights the growing importance of fire prevention and education around battery-powered devices.
Fire Prevention Week, founded in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety education in every community.
Lithium-ion batteries power many of today’s household items — including smartphones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, and toys — but they can pose serious fire risks when misused, damaged, or improperly charged. The NFPA reports a rise in battery-related fires nationwide, underscoring the need for increased public awareness and safe charging practices.
The Commissioners encourage all residents to follow three key steps to help prevent fires:
- Buy only listed and approved products.
- Charge batteries safely.
- Recycle them responsibly.
Proper disposal and recycling of lithium-ion batteries not only reduce fire risks but also protect the environment.
Queen Anne’s County extends its appreciation to local fire departments and first responders for their ongoing commitment to fire prevention, safety education, and community outreach.
