Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and being prepared in advance makes a world of difference. Start by knowing your evacuation zone, creating a family emergency plan, and assembling an emergency kit with essentials like food, water, medications, and important documents. These are easy and can be fun to involve the whole family in being prepared!

In the event of a hurricane warning, be sure to secure your home by boarding up windows, clearing gutters, and moving loose outdoor items indoors. Ensure your car is fueled and stocked with supplies and be prepared to make arrangements for pets and anyone with special needs. Stay informed through alerts from FEMA, NOAA, and local emergency services.

If a hurricane is approaching, follow evacuation orders and shelter in a small, interior room if staying home. Avoid driving or walking through floodwaters and wait for an official "all clear" sign before returning to / exiting from your home. Use caution during cleanup—wear protective gear, avoid electrical hazards, and document any damage for insurance purposes. Preparedness saves lives and reduces damage, so taking steps early is key to staying safe.

Medical Identity Theft

Scammers have long used identity theft as a method to steal money from victims. While many seniors benefit from medical assistance—this crime isn't just limited to them—anyone using medical assistance is at risk. Beyond financial loss, having your identity stolen can lead to false medical records, denied coverage, or incorrect treatment.

Medical identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information—such as your name or Medicare number—to access medical services, prescriptions, or surgeries and charge them to your insurance or provider.

Some ways to combat this type of fraud:

  • Watch for signs your identity has been stolen:
    • If you receive bills for medical services you did not receive or are contacted by legitimate debt collection companies for unpaid medical bills you didn't charge.
    • If your insurance company denies a request for a medical condition you do not have or alerts you that you have reached your limit on medical benefits and you haven't made a recent request or charge.
    • If you notice your HSA, or similar account, begin losing funds and you haven't been using it.
  • What to do:
    • Collect the bills/charges sent to you and call or visit the medical office the bill was sent from to discuss the charge, preferably with a trusted friend or family member present.
    • Ask your health care provider for a copy of your current medical file. If anything is wrong, request for a correction to be made.
    • Contact your Senior Medicare Patrol for help at smpresource.org.
  • How to stay safe:
    • Protect your Medicare and other health insurance cards like you protect your credit card.
    • Review your statements and medical bills to verify that everything is correct.
    • Only give personal information to Medicare approved doctors, other providers and suppliers, your State Health Insurance Assistance Program or Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program, or the Social Security Administration.
    • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800- 633-4227) to see if a provider is approved by Medicare.
    • Completely destroy any personal/financial documents and labels on prescription bottles/packages before you throw them away.
  • If you believe you are the victim of an Internet crime, or if you are aware of an Internet crime, you can file a complaint with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
